Abstract

Religious tolerance is a crucial thing nowadays, this is a means for bridging a good interaction between one person to others about religious and several aspects of life. In the intercultural dialogue in order to make interaction with other person use several media not only by written text but also spoken text. Nowadays, intercultural dialogue through multimodal texts. This means the essence of multimodal texts can be interpreted by putting all the various modes used in the text together. The multimodal text always appears in several medias, such as a news on newspaper online or social medias. In this research, the researcher focus on the written text. To build religious tolerance, the readers have to evaluate all the text related the religious fact that spread in the internet or other medias. So that, the critical and evaluative reading is one of important tools to build the religious tolerance character for the students especially English Education students in UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta. The objective of this research is to investigate the application of critical and evaluative reading lesson to build the religious tolerance. The method of this research is qualitative descriptive research. The researcher found the data through interview, observation, and document analysis. The result of this research, the fundamental things is the media for practicing reading comprehension as material in critical reading lesson, those are the news online and caption from several social media about religious, culture and value facts. In addition, the lecturer combines the tolerance building character with the lesson. This conclusion shows that students are generally better able to understand good religious tolerance during the study period. It can also strengthen religious beliefs and tolerances and provide understanding, confidence and tolerance with different believers
